THE IDEA BEHIND:
The idea behind
PAULA DAMAGE LAB
came from the need to work on
one exact sample
that
cannot be recreated:
the source is analog,
and that take
will never happen again.
PAULA DAMAGE LAB
is
the emergency kit
for
working with what you have.
The Destroyer's PAULA DAMAGE LAB
PAULA DAMAGE LAB is a free sampler, sample editor and destructive effects processor for the Commodore Amiga, written in C89 for the 68020 and running on its own 320x256 screen under AmigaOS 3.1. The idea behind it came from the need to work on one exact sample that cannot be recreated: when the source is analogue, that take will never happen again, so resampling is not an option and the only way forward is to damage what you already have. It records through a parallel port sampler cartridge with monitor-first punch-in, browses and auditions samples through its own file browser, and applies more than thirty effects that are designed to be gentle on a single press and brutal when stacked. Samples are saved as 8-bit RAW, ready to be imported into Oktalyzer, ProTracker or OctaMED. The whole program is a single self-contained executable with no external libraries, and it is free: giftware, freely distributable, and the music you make with it is yours.
